S

pring trends usher in the sense of renewal and new-found energy. They give us a new lease on life as we pack away the heaviness of winter and replace our wardrobes with light, bright spring colours. In this issue of Fashion, we bring you the best of both national and international fashion trends for the season with our runway reports for both women and men. Embrace bright yellows, fresh whites and relaxed looks. We have a chat with Jenny Joblin from Federation about her career, new range and first time showcasing at New Zealand Fashion Week since 2009. Keeping you on trend, we break down some of the season’s must-follow styles, including the sexy off-the-shoulder look and bold stripes that are worn any which way. It’s said that green is the new black, so follow our style tips on how to pull this off on page 17. Or indulge in the femininity of lovely lace on page 21. Accessorising is the key to any new look, but at what price? We take a look at the world’s most expensive handbag, the Hermès Birkin, and its surprisingly humble beginnings, along with all the key facts you need to know before considering the year-long waiting list for one of your own. Beauty runs from the inside out. In our beauty section, we encourage you to take the time to give yourself a facial workout with Clemency Alice’s top tips, show you how to groom your brows to perfection, and provide a step-by-step guide to creating a ’70s-inspired hairstyle. Enjoy this issue of Fashion,

Proenza Schouler – New York Fashion Week

Change How To Wear Your Handbag Designers at New York Fashion Week started a new trend of wearing a short strapped shoulder bag across your body, rather than over the shoulder. the shorter the strap the better, as the bag should be tucked just under your armpit.

Get A One-piece this season it’s all about the reinvented one-pieces. Chic designs featuring peek-a-boo mesh inserts, sultry bustier silhouettes, and graffiti prints have turned what was once thought of as old, new again.

one of the most noticeable trends at this year’s new Zealand Fashion week was the use of head-to-toe white. typically reserved for the spring/summer collections, this trend was seen throughout many collections. a style tip to remember when embracing this trend is it’s all about how you wear it: mix textures, layer multiple pieces, and use various shades.

BIrdS VS.

BEES Vanessa Ortynsky catches up with Jenny Joblin as Federation returns to New Zealand Fashion Week with its AW17 Collection.

E

very year, the New Zealand fashion industry gathers for a week of international and local talent. Established and emerging designers showcase their Autumn/ Winter 2017 collections to media delegates; magazine editors, bloggers, buyers and the occasional reality show celebrity. New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) days and nights are filled with shows, both onsite at the Viaduct Events Centre and at offsite locations ranging from galleries (Twenty-Seven Names) to gentlemen’s clubs (Miss Crabb). Both on the runway and on the streets, photographers are at the ready to capture the trends worn by New Zealand’s well-heeled fashionistas. After a seven-year hiatus, one show on everybody’s radar was streetwear label Federation. Edgy yet emphatically wearable, Federation has a dedicated following of late teens and early 20-year-olds. I sat down with creative director, Jenny Joblin before her Wednesday night show to talk about her collection, “Birds Vs. Bees”, her impressive collection of heels, and favourite Auckland spots.

When the Fashion Week committee approached Jenny, she felt “this was an opportunity to bring Federation back to its roots and focus on what’s important to us”. Concentrating more on the New Zealand market, it made sense to show where it all began, in Auckland. As with previous lines, Birds Vs. Bees – Federation’s autumn/winter 2017 collection – draws upon cultural references, art and literature. “Without Googling it, I was always curious as to the etymology of the term, ‘the birds and the bees’. Why do we say it?” The collection is a play on this common saying and an extension of the brand itself – juxtaposing tough street style with beautiful composition and construction. Jenny designs for the women in her life, women she knows. “I still look back at previous collections and I still like them. I’ve always been drawn to comfort. I have a beautiful, mostly untouched collection of heels in my closet.” An Auckland native, Jenny is strongly connected to the City of Sails. “Our paradise at home is the perfect retreat. We also love the Blind Basket Café, which is located right next to our workroom in Takapuna. I can’t resist a glass of rosé at Madam Woo and dinner at Clooney.” Much like the brand itself, Jenny is refreshingly relatable and immediately likeable. The Federation workroom is attached to the flagship store in Takapuna, which perfectly suits the laidback brand and team of six.

From Stand To Streets the new fashion term to know is “terrace fashion”, which takes football style attire and gives it a high-fashion twist. this trend first appeared in the international 2016 shows and set to peak for the european spring/summer 2017 season. Taking inspiration from the way football fans dress, think matching two-piece tracksuits, zip-up nylon jumpers, boxy t-shirts, retro sports prints and plenty of attitude.

Balenciaga spring/summer 2016 – Paris Fashion Week

Just Relax Fitted suits are now considered a thing of the past in the world of menswear. This was a trend first spotted during the European spring/summer 2017 collections. one, in particular, was oversized grandfather coats that practically swallowed models at Balenciaga in Paris. The trend was confirmed at New York Fashion Week with designers also following suit, opting for loose-fitting, shapeless garments. Perry Ellis matched looser outerwear with more fitted pants, shorts and shirts for a winning contrast.

This summer’s all about the off-the-shoulder look. For daywear take inspiration from Olivia Palermo and look for pretty tops with voluminous, ruffled sleeves. During the evening we love glam gowns, like the ones Lily-Rose Depp and Julia Roberts recently wore to the Cannes Film Festival. Exposed shoulders are the chicest way to show some skin and the style is excellent for hiding any unwanted extra winter kilos. Simply dab on an illuminating body lotion and you’ll be prepped to wear this summer’s hottest trend.

Make a dark khaki green pop against strong bright colours or style more classically with neutral tones. Add a green military coat to give an interesting tone to grey or black basics without making too much of a statement, while camo pants and accessories add a subtle tough-girl touch. These shades can be worn to suit all styles from safari chic, minimal or utility. Victoria Tait explores what makes the Hermès Birkin bag so unique.

Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas

English actress and singer Jane Birkin with seven-month-old Kate Barry, her daughter by composer John Barry, 9th November 1967, by Getty Images.

ast month the auction room at christie’s hong Kong was packed tightly with fashionistas and purveyors of fine goods. There was an auction list of over 30 lots put together in a carefully curated catalogue consisting of fine art, ancient ceramics, jewellery, watches, rare wines and handbags. The item to watch was a Birkin – a 12-inch matte himalayan crocodile handbag, with white-gold hardware set with 245 F-colour diamonds, weighing close to 10 carats. Once the hammer fell this bag sold for a massive HKD$1.72 million (NZD$306,925), becoming “the most valuable handbag in the world”. We have all seen celebrities carry the famous bag and heard the stories about year-long waiting lists to get your hands on one, but what you might find surprising is that this famous bag has a very practical and simple history. It all started in 1983, on an Air France flight from Paris to London. singer/actress and mother of three Jane Birkin was sitting

next to hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas, who had taken over the leather goods company founded by his great-grandfather. During the flight Jane dropped her bag scattering its contents. her neighbour came to her aid and Jane told him, “Bags never have enough pockets!” At that point, he introduced himself and offered to have her dream bag made for her in his workshops. she explained exactly what she wanted. he took notes during the flight and stepped off the plane with a preliminary sketch. They met up in the workshop to discuss further and, in 1984, he created a black leather bag for her, based on a 1982 design. The final bag was spacious, sturdy, and convenient to use; a simple, elegant design. There was no question about what to call it; the Hermès Birkin bag was born. From its humble, practical beginnings, it’s no wonder this bag has stood the test of time. However, it’s the bag’s social status and exceptional design features that have women all around the world signing on to the huge waiting list.

Hermès Birkin

fast facts:

• Birkin bags come in a range of sizes. They can be made to order with different custom-chosen hides, colour, and hardware fixtures, as well as other individual options including diamond-encrusting. • A variety of hides are available, including calf leather, lizard, and ostrich. The most expensive is the saltwater crocodile skin. • It’s an investment! In 2016, a study found that Birkin bags had a resale value of a 14.2% return between 1980 and 2015. • The interior colour of each bag matches the exterior and is lined with goat-skin. Prices for the bag depend on the type of skin, the colour, and hardware fixtures. • The rare and very collectible Shooting Star Birkin – identified by its metallic star stamp next to “Hermès, Paris. Made in France” – has been made by an independent artisan for individual use. Each artisan is allowed to make one per year.

Most expensive bag in the world

• Every bag bears the mark of the artisan who made the bag. You might find stamps of more than one artisan. The fonts used and the order of stamping may vary, depending on the artisans.

This Hermès Birkin bag was sold at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong for a massive HKD$1.72 million (NZD$306,925). The bag is made from a very rare Himalayan crocodile skin, features white gold detailing and 245 diamonds.

• Sizes range from 25cm to 40cm, with travelling bags of 50-55cm. • The bag has a lock and keys, which are number-coded. Early locks only bore one number on the bottom of the lock. • The metallic hardware, which includes the lock, keys, buckles, and base studs, are plated with gold or palladium to prevent tarnishing. • Hermès offers a “spa treatment” – this is a reconditioning for overworked bags. • Don’t confuse the similar Hermès Kelly bag with the Birkin. The Kelly is a single-handle handbag, while the Birkin has two handles.

Facialist Clemency Alice takes us through a relaxing and restorative facial massage that will have your skin glowing for summer. Your hands are a powerful tool in determining the appearance of your skin. By incorporating stimulating facial massage movements into your daily skincare regime, your skin will look healthy and fresh with an additional softness and glow. There are 42 individual muscles in the face that can be toned just like any other muscle group. Facial massage helps improve muscle tone and relieves tension in the face. It facilitates the draining of unwanted toxins plus increases oxygen to the skin tissue. To get the most of your massage routine, take your time; this is a restorative, nurturing procedure that allows your skin to fully absorb the skincare actives and creates valuable time-out for you. Before beginning your massage routine, warm your facial oil in your hands, this will ensure that the ingredients in the oil are absorbed by the skin. Use products sparingly so not to overburden the skin.

xford’s only clothing boutique has become famous across Canterbury for its specialism in natural fibres and support of fair trade and New Zealand made. In the last three years, owner Jessica Fearnley-Campbell has worked hard to fill Marmalade Clothing & Curiosities to the

brim with fashion-conscious essentials. From bamboo socks and underwear to silk scarves, New Zealand merino and organic cotton dresses, this unique store is a treasure trove of eclectic design, pattern and sumptuous fabrics. For Jessica it is important to know where her stock comes from – there is no other business in the region offering such a sustainable selection of clothing, jewellery and accessories all under one roof. What else makes Marmalade unique? This spring the store will become the only southern hemisphere stockist of UK best practice brands Weird Fish and Lily & Me. “We are so excited to have some new British labels in the store,” says Jessica. “Weird Fish offers fresh casual lifestyle clothing, perfect for New Zealanders who like to enjoy the outdoors at the weekend, while the Lily & Me garments feature a fabulous range of unique, bold prints.” Spring presents us with vivid and energetic colours such as ‘fiesta’, ‘melon’, ‘buttercup’, aqua and ‘snorkel blue’, all of which transport you to a happier, sunnier place as soon as you walk in through the door of this friendly local business. In an instant, you realise it’s well worth the 40-minute drive from the city centre to find yourself a unique fashion must-have. Jessica only ever stocks one or two of each size, in each style, so you have to be in quick.

techniques

Step 1

Awaken: Firstly dispense and then warm the product in the palms of your hands. Cup these over your face and do three ‘inhale ~ exhale’ breathing sequences. Gently massage the product onto your face, neck and décolletage using upward, gentle, sweeping movements.

Step 2

Revive: Starting from the chin and working along the jawline, perform quick, rhythmic pinching movements with your thumb and forefinger. Work your way up across the cheeks to the forehead.

Step 3

Smooth: Place all four fingers at the centre of your forehead. With a firm pressure, slowly glide out towards temples. Repeat three times.

Rodin Olio Lusso Luxury Face Oil

Step 4

Release: With the balls of your thumbs, press firmly into the hollows beneath the inner corners of your eyebrows. Repeat these pressures to the outer edge of your eyebrow, each time holding for a slow count of three.

Step 5

Glide: Place the fingers on each side of your nose, and slowly glide below cheekbones to the ears. Repeat three times.

Bobbi Brown Soothing Cleansing Oil

Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil

Step 6

Oxygenate: Closing your eyes, gently tap the entire face and neck with your fingertips (15 seconds).

Step 7

Repose: Cup your hands on either side of the face and hold for a slow count of five then release. Then press the forehead and chin, hold for a slow count of five and gently release.

to see results, this is a disciplined sequence that needs to be performed once a day. think of your facial massage routine as a way of maintaining the tone and fitness of your skin. it’s rather like going to the gym or yoga class only once a week versus on a more disciplined day-to-day basis.

brows

With so many brow shapes and products on the market, it’s easy to get confused. We’ve spoken to the experts and have some essential tips on brow care. Words Victoria tait From choosing the right tone and shape to selecting products that suit your skill level, the road to brow perfection can seem full of twists and turns. Let us show you the way, following this season’s trend of natural full-shaped brows.

Tone Dark block brows are out. Look for a colour tone that is similar if not lighter than your hair colour. A great tool to use to aid you with this is the interactive online ‘Benefit brows Explorer’ (visit www. ballantynes.co.nz and click on the Benefit link). Or ask a beauty expert at your preferred beauty counter.

Now Brow Collection – Estée Lauder

Brow Pencil – Bobbi Brown

Shapes The best way to determine your natural brow shape is to leave your brows unplucked for at least six to eight weeks. Through this, you will achieve a natural brow growth pattern, rather than forcing brows into an unnatural shape. work with what nature has given you! shapes include straight, like Natalie Portman, arched like Katy Perry, or rounded like Jennifer Lopez.

Ka Brow – Benefit

Brow Artist sculpt – L’oréal Paris

Finishing Touches brow gels are a must for thinner brows as they increase the texture of your brows and make them appear thicker. If you have thick unruly brows, a gel is all you will need to define your shape. Highlight under your brow to lift it and enhance all that hard work. Make sure you choose a product you are comfortable with. If you’re a beginner, start with a simple product such as Benefit Goof Proof and build towards the more advanced products.

Several different techniques and products add depth and denseness to your eyebrows. When filling in brows, remember to use a product that is a touch lighter and more muted than your brow hair colour to achieve a natural look. Pencils – Choose one with a very fine tip in order to create small strokes that mimic actual hairs, to keep the look as natural as possible. Brush and Powder – Use these to produce slightly heavier look, which you can combat by working the product into your brows with a brush.

Master Brow Pro – Maybelline

Brow Markers – These offer maximum impact and are ideal for reconstructing shape.

Sophie Matthews provides a step-by-step guide to achieving this super sexy look. Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine Spray

Redken Rootful Root Lifting Spray

Kevin Murphy Full Again Thickening Lotion

GHDs Kate Moss by Getty Images

STEP 1

After shampooing and conditioning hair, apply products at the roots – I recommend Redken Rootful. Through your mid-lengths apply a thickening lotion, like Kevin Murphy Full Again, which will add the volume you need from roots to ends. Blow-dry hair upside down until 100% dry.

STEP 2

Apply a heat protector – I use Redken Iron Hold Heat. Put hair into sections and create a curl using large tongs or straighteners. Alternate sections with curls and waves for a more beachy, textured look.

STEP 3

Turn head upside down and shake and spritz with a finishing spray (Kevin Murphy Doo.Over) and dust hair with a volume powder, like Redken Powder Grip, at the roots to create a textured volume that lasts all day. Turn head back upright and reapply products. Twist and scrunch hair into place and apply a spritz of Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine Spray, leaving gold flakes in the hair for super shine. TIP The slower you pull the straighteners through the hair the tighter the curl; the quicker you pull them through the looser the curl.

Let’s talk lips with Koru Clinic The features on a person’s face can change or determine how they are perceived, and we are all subconsciously affected by these cues. Every time we see a face, we make judgments on that person’s character and personality, and all this happens instantly and automatically in our brains.

“Your face is unique. Trust your injectable wrinkle treatments to an experienced Cosmetic Physician”

Years spent talking, chewing, pouting, smoking or smiling can lead to lines and wrinkles around the lips. Lip fullness can also be an indicator of aging, as time spent biting or pursing the lips can lead to deflated, thin lips over time. Lips are also especially vulnerable to environmental effects, as the skin on the lips is less than a third of the thickness of the skin on the rest of your face.

Many women really want to improve the appearance of their lips but are understandably very scared about looking like a duck, especially after the all too common publicised disasters affecting some unfortunate celebrities. These days we all recognise women are looking for a natural appearance rather than looking like a “Kardashian”. Dermal fillers for the lips are one of the most popular cosmetic medicine treatments available, and are a very quick and easy way to dramatically improve your look. They typically last between 12 – 14 months, and are hyaluronic acid based. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin, meaning the risk of adverse reactions to the procedure is very, very small. Recovery time is usually around 1 day.

“Your face is unique. Trust your most valuable asset to us.”

There are generally 3 types of requests for lip fillers at Koru Clinic, clients who want to: 1. Boost Lip Volume 2. Minimise smokers lines 3. Define the lip border & reduce lipstick bleed Younger patients tend to go for larger lip volumes, whilst more mature women

want a more natural lip augmentation. At Koru Clinic we only recommend using hyaluronic acid based fillers with high safety profiles, and after assessing each persons lips will decide on the most appropriate filler for the augmentation. Dr Jefferies is a cosmetic Physician working at Koru Clinic. Call 372 3589 for an appointment to chat about a lip augmentation.
